Early Life and Education

It was on August 3, 1955, when Ajay Piramal was born in a well-known business family in Rajasthan. And just so you know, it was his grandfather, Piramal Chatrabhuj, in 1934, who initiated a business textile company to form the cycle of work for his family. After many years, Ajay’s father, Gopikisan Piramal, became the head of the company, but he passed away in 1979. After five years of that, Ajal’s older brother also passed away, but this time because of cancer, and it really was a big tragedy for Ajay himself.

Though, Ajay didn’t let his education slip because of all the family problems and other things, and that’s why he kept on attending Jai Hind College to obtain a degree in Science, which he then completed at the Basantsingh Institute of Science, University of Mumbai. He later completed a Master of Management from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai, India, where he fine-tuned his business skills. And yes, to further improve his skills, he attended the six-week Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 1992 and the expansion of his global perspective on business leadership experience, you know?

It was in the year 1977 when Ajay’s business trajectory began to skyrocket and that’s when he joined his family’s textile enterprise at the age of just 22. With his acute intellectual business insight, he broadened the company’s influence into various sectors. The Piramal Group’s real bright moment came in 1988 with Ajay’s buyout of Nicholas Laboratories, an Australian pharmaceutical firm. And this was the very move that made Piramal Enterprises the 2nd biggest pharma group in India, can you even believe that?

And from there on, it became kinda the image of Ajay as a businessman who doesn’t fear when making bold decisions while also taking into account the risk factor, and that’s what really made him famous. Particularly notable was the Vodafone India case in which he acquired an 11% stake in two acquisitions. Though, Nandini Piramal married Peter D’Young, an American citizen, in 2009 while Anand got hitched to billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s daughter, Isha Ambani. Though, the family of Ajay is very dedicated to spirituality, as evidenced by their followers of Radhanath Swami. One of the gifts that still warms the hearts of the family is Ajay’s sharing of the 50,000-square-foot mansion called Gulita which he presented to Anand and Isha Ambani as a loving wedding gift.
